About Trip

Tibet Everest Base Camp Tour is a thrilling overland adventure to the base camp of Mount Everest’s North Face. You get a close-up view of Mount Everest, the world’s tallest mountain by riding to the foot of the mountain. No strenuous climbing or trekking is required to reach the north side base camp of Mount Everest.

In eight days, you will get to experience the natural as well as cultural highlights of Tibet. An amazing overland drive across the Tibetan plateau will take you to Tibet’s important cities, Buddhist sites, and the world’s highest base camp.

A flight over the Himalayan mountains brings you from Kathmandu to Lhasa. You spend three nights in Lhasa acclimatizing and discovering its cultural landmarks. Explore Potala Palace, Norbulingka, Jokhang Temple, Drepung Monastery, and Sera Monastery. Walk around Barkhor Street, the economic hub of Lhasa.

You start your overland journey from Lhasa by taking the Friendship Highway to Shigatse. En route, you stop at the beautiful Yamdrok Tso Lake and Gyantse, a historic town filled with ancient Buddhist monasteries, stupas, and forts. At Shigatse, you explore the sacred Tashilhunpo Monastery and the lively local market.

The road from Shigatse to Shegar or Xegar is filled with fabulous views of mountains. Snow-capped summits of Mount Everest, Shisapangma, and other giants cover the horizon. You drive across the picturesque mountain pass of Gyatchu La before arriving in Xegar.

From Xegar you head to Rongbuk Monastery. Located at an altitude of 5100 meters above sea level, Rongbuk is the highest Buddhist monastery in the world. You explore the Rongbuk Glacier that lies close to the monastery and take a short hike to Everest Base Camp. The rocky summit of Mount Everest’s North Face appears quite close to the base camp.

Driving from Xegar you cross the Nepal-Tibet border at Kerung. Your trip ends with a scenic drive across the Nepalese countryside to Kathmandu.

The best seasons for the Tibet Everest Base Camp Tour are spring, autumn and summer. One needs to be in good physical form to do this trip. If you don’t have any serious health issues then you can easily complete this trip. We advise you to check with your doctor if you have weak heart, lungs, or joints before booking this trip.

Most places in Tibet lie at an elevation of 3000 meters and above. To help your body adapt to the high altitude you spend three nights in Lhasa. If you feel any discomfort our guide will help you get medical attention.

Our Tibetan drivers and guides are experienced, knowledgeable and can communicate in English. We use clean and well maintained private vehicles for the overland tour.

If you have always dreamt of exploring Tibet this trip is for you. Our 8-day itinerary covers all the important Tibetan cultural sites and cities. Staying at hotels and guesthouses run by Tibetan families you will get to learn more about their lifestyle and culture.

This is also a great trip for those who want to get close to Mount Everest without trekking or climbing. Unlike the South Side (Nepal) of EBC, the North Everest Base Camp offers a clear view of Mount Everest’s summit. You will be able to view the entire Mount Everest from the Rongbuk Base Camp.

Itinerary

Day 01: Fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa

Upon your arrival in Lhasa, you will be received by our Tibetan guide at the airport. Then you will be transferred to your accommodation in Lhasa. It’s advisable to rest and take it easy for the remainder of the day due to Lhasa’s altitude. Overnight at Hotel, Breakfast included.

Day 02: Sightseeing Tour in Lhasa

We spend our day visiting several monasteries in Lhasa in the company of a guide and interpreter. One of these is the Sera Monastery, a best-preserved monastery in Tibet within its whitewashed walls and golden roofs. After lunch we visit Norbulingka, a summer palace of the Dalai Lama and the Jokhang Temple, a most sacred shrine in Tibet. Surrounding the Jokhang is the Barkor – a maze of narrow cobbled streets that is the central market of Lhasa. Overnight at Hotel, Breakfast included.

Day 03: Second day sightseeing tour in Lhasa

We visit Potala Palace in the morning. It is a palace that dominates the city of Lhasa. It is a spectacular building containing private quarters of the Dalai Lama as well as numerous grand state rooms and many important chapels. There has been a Palace on this site since the 5th or 6th century, but the present Palace was constructed in the 17th century. After lunch, we visit the Drepung Monastery, which was founded in the 14th century. It used to be the largest monastery in the world, with a population of around 10,000 monks. These days the number has fallen down to hundred. Overnight at Hotel, Breakfast included.

Day 04: Lhasa to Shigatse (3900m/12792ft) 350 Km, 7 hrs

Our drive follows the Tsangpo River. We ascend up to 15,700-foot Khampa La. We see Yamdrok Lake below and in the near distance rises a great snow peak of Ningdzingzonka. We then head westward along the lake and drive toward Gyantse. In Gyantse, we visit the famous Pelkor Monastery. The Pelkor Chode Monastery also includes Gyantse Kumbum. The Kumbum has nine floors and each tier has unique chapels. It is considered the largest of the three Kumbums in Tibet. After one and half hour drive, we arrive in Shigatse. Overnight at Hotel, Breakfast included.

Day 05: Shigatse to Xegar (4200m) 240 Km, 6 hrs

Morning Visit Panchen Lama’s Tashilhumpu Monastery. Then Drive to Xegar crossing over Gyatchula (a pass of 5,200m). Overnight at Guesthouse, Breakfast included

Day 06: Xegar - Rongbuk (4980m) – Everest Base Camp, 9-10 Hrs

We leave Rongbuk in the morning to visit the Everest Base Camp (5,250m/17,220ft). We drive to Everest base camp by local bus. On the way, we enjoy spectacular views of high mountains like Cho Oyu (8,201m/26,906ft), Shishapangma (8,013m/26,289ft) and, of course, the mighty Everest (8,848m/29,028ft) also known as Mt. Chomolongma in the Tibetan side. Today, we accomplish one of the major highlights of our trip, reaching the base camp of Mt. Everest. We make approximately a 16 km round trip around the Everest Base Camp. The base camp itself is dry and barren, but the view of Everest is more than compensating. After spending some quality time at the base of the world’s highest mountain then we drive back to Xegar. Overnight at Guesthouse, breakfast included.

Day 07: Xegar to Kerung (3700m) 315 km, 5-6 hrs
